Area women making news


Health Care Heroes Honored

The 2017 Health Care Heroes award winners were announced November 11 during a ceremony at the Country Club of Landfall. Several area women were among the category winners in this year’s awards, which is put on by WILMA sister publication, Greater Wilmington Business Journal. They were:

JOANNE “ANNE” ALLEN (above right), of Allen Spine & Sports Medicine and Emerge Ortho, earned the top award in the Physician Category.

OLIVIA HERNDON (above left), director of mental health and co-director of continuing education at South East Area Health Education Center-NHRMC, was the winner in the Community Achievement category.

And COMMON THREAD MINISTRY, a women’s circle program at Pine Valley United Methodist Church in Wilmington, was the winner of the Volunteer Category, which chair Jeanne Scott accepted.

Ballentine Becomes CFCC's New Health Sciences Dean

Officials with Cape Fear Community College announced the hiring of ANGELA BALLENTINE as dean of health sciences.

Ballentine most recently served as vice president of Academic Affairs at Vance- Granville Community College in Henderson. Originally from Eden, she attended Greensboro College for her undergraduate degree and later became certified in radiographic technology through the Radiologic Technology Department at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Ballentine began her career as a radiographer, specializing in mammography. She worked as a mammography specialist in Houston before beginning her career in higher education at Vance-Granville. While working at Vance-Granville, Ballentine earned both a master’s of education degree and a doctorate in higher education at North Carolina State University.

“The health science disciplines require real teamwork, and I can already see that our faculty and staff truly rally around our students to make sure that everyone is successful,” Ballentine says.

YWCA Opens Women’s Business Center

The YWCA Lower Cape Fear recently announced the unveiling of a new business development initiative called COASTAL WOMEN’S VENTURES.

The program was created as a partnership between the YWCA and Carolina Small Business Development Fund (CSBDF). Coastal Women’s Ventures is a collaborative program focused on creating and supporting small business opportunities for women entrepreneurs through business coaching, mentoring, small business education, and connecting participants to loan capital, YWCA officials say.

The new center is located inside the YWCA Lower Cape Fear at 2815 South College Road. ACQUINETTA BEATTY was named director of the Coastal Women’s Ventures office.

“The goal is to help as many as possible. There really is no limit,” Beatty says. “With Carolina Small Business Development Fund ... the impact since 2010, they’ve made 576 small business loans totaling $41.6 million, and this has created or retained 1,910 jobs across North Carolina.”

Brunswick County Names Dixon as Planning Director

​KIRSTIE DIXON was named Brunswick County’s next planning director.

Dixon began working with Brunswick County as a planner II and supervisor of central permitting in 2004. Since then, she has held several positions within the county’s Planning Department, most recently working as planning manager. Dixon has more than seventeen years of experience with municipal and county planning.

“I’m really excited and honored for this great opportunity, and I look forward to leading the planning team into the future,” Dixon says.

Mike Hargett, the county’s current planning and economic development director, had previously announced his retirement for the end of 2017.

“I appreciate Kirstie Dixon’s approach to sound planning principles and her skill in adapting them to real-world needs and support of our property owners and developers. She provides excellent, pro-active customer support,” County Manager Ann Hardy says.
